High-yield grafting of carboxylated polymers to wood pulp fibers

چکیده

Poly(ethylene-alt-maleic acid), PEMAc, is a linear polymer that, along with its isomer polyacrylic acid, has the highest carboxylic acid content of any polymer. The goal this work was to elucidate mechanisms that control amount PEMAc permanently fixed on pulp fibers after impregnation dry dilute solution followed by drying/heating (curing). Two which cellulose were discovered, chemical, and physical fixation. With room temperature drying only fixation operative. Evidence supports explanation consequence slow swelling dissolution thick dried deposits fiber surfaces. Chemical includes grafting plus enhanced cohesion within layers, possibly due interchain crosslinking. pH determines mechanism for curing temperatures above 100 °C. Physical dominates when > 8 whereas chemical values ≤ 7, suggesting reactions require partial or complete protonation succinic moieties. yield impregnated washing depends upon mechanism. When dominates, yields low high molecular weight doses less than 0.1 meq/g (6.3 kg PEMA/tonne pulp) close equaled 100%. By contrast, primary fixation, are ~50% 0–20% MW PEMAc. These results show can be achieved under conditions could implemented in machines producing market pulp.

Raman Spectroscopic Characterization of Wood and Pulp Fibers, Chapter 2

This chapter reviews applications of Raman spectroscopy in the field of wood and pulp fibers. Most of the literature examined was published between 1998 and 2006. In addi tion to introduction, this chapter contains sections on wood and components, mechanical pulp, chemical pulp, modified/treated wood, cellulose I crystallinity of wood fibers, and the “self-absorption” phenomenon in near-infrar...

Using Cationic Polymers to Improve Alkenyl Succinic Anhydride (asa) Sizing Efficiency in High-yield Pulp Containing Furnish

High-yield pulp (HYP) such as bleached chemi-thermo-mechanical pulp (BCTMP) from aspen wood, is now being used in the production of highquality fine papers, and this is particularly true in China. In this study, the effect of using cationic polymers such as poly-aluminum chloride (PAC), polyethylenimine (PEI), cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM), and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) ...

Enzymatic Bleaching of Wood Pulp

The dark colour of kraft pulp after the wood chips have been heated at high temperature with NaOH solution is caused by lignin (a complex phenolic polymer) still attached to the cellulose fibres. Traditionally this pulp is treated with chlorine to bleach the pulp to make it suitable for paper making. Unfortunately this leads to the formation of some potentially toxic chlorophenolic compounds of...

Exploring the effects of treatments with carbohydrases to obtain a high-cellulose content pulp from a non-wood alkaline pulp.

In this work, treatments with a xylanase (X) and carbohydrases mixture (Cx) were applied on a TCF bleached sisal pulp in order to obtain high-cellulose content fibers applicable on a wide range of uses. A limit of ≈12% w/w final content in hemicelluloses was found regardless of the enzymatic treatment assessed. An extraction with 4% and 9% w/v NaOH was performed for further hemicelluloses remov...

Hybridizing wood cellulose and graphene oxide toward high-performance fibers

High-performance microfibers such as carbon fibers are widely used in aircraft and wind turbine blades. Well-aligned, strong microfibers prepared by hybridizing two-dimensional (2D) graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and one-dimensional (1D) nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) fibers are designed here for the first time and have the potential to supersede carbon fibers due to their low cost. These well...
